All of them carry a distinctive mediaeval look, decorated with ancient architecture and sculpture and connected by cobbled streets. Not surprisingly, there are six UNESCO world heritage sites in the valley. They include three Durbar Squares, Pashupatinath Temple dedicated to the Lord of the Beasts and Swayambhunath Stupa (monkey temple), a 17th century monument standing atop a high hill and guarded by live monkeys. Beside, there are wonderful museums, fantastic royal courtyards, and fascinating ancient palaces replete with woodcarvings, numerous Buddhist shrines, and scenes of timeless beauty. They great architectural and artistic tradition of the valley can truly surprise a visit or other attractions include a visit to the temple of the living virgin Goddess Kumari a look at the Krishna temple which is completely made of stones and a stroll below the great Nyatapol temple, the highest in the valley.
